Alexander Velázquez is a professional engineer, Divemaster, photographer, author, musician, and lifelong explorer passionate about understanding the world through science, adventure, and curiosity. Born and raised in Puerto Rico, he developed an early connection with nature, the ocean, and the outdoors—interests that continue to shape his personal and professional journey.

From an early age, Alexander was involved in competitive swimming, developing a strong foundation in watermanship, discipline, and physical fitness. He spent five years working as a lifeguard and swim instructor, experiences that strengthened his commitment to safety, leadership, and helping others build confidence in the water. These skills would later become invaluable in his diving career.

With more than two decades of experience in engineering, risk analysis, and safety analysis of nuclear facilities, Alexander has built a career focused on solving complex problems and making informed decisions in challenging environments. His engineering background influences how he approaches exploration, whether underwater, on remote hiking trails, or beneath dark night skies.

As a new certified Divemaster and underwater photographer, Alexander is particularly drawn to the beauty and fragility of marine ecosystems. Through diving, he documents marine life, explores coral reefs, and advocates for ocean conservation while sharing lessons learned from his experiences both above and below the surface.

Beyond the ocean, Alexander enjoys camping, hiking, astrophotography, travel, and outdoor adventure. He believes that exploration is not limited to a single environment but extends from the depths of the sea to mountain trails and the vastness of the night sky. His adventures inspire a deeper appreciation for nature, science, and the interconnectedness of our world.

Alexander is also a musician and saxophone player. Music has long been one of his creative outlets, complementing his interests in photography, storytelling, and exploration. Whether through music, images, writing, or adventure, he seeks to connect people with experiences that inspire curiosity and reflection.

He is the author of Spirits in a Changing World, a book that explores the intersection of technology, artificial intelligence, climate change, spirituality, and the future of humanity. He is currently developing Diving Like an Engineer, a project that applies engineering principles, risk management, human factors, and systems thinking to scuba diving and adventure activities.

Through De Orilla, Alexander shares stories, photographs, educational resources, and reflections designed to inspire others to explore responsibly, think critically, and cultivate a lifelong sense of wonder. His mission is simple: to encourage people to discover the extraordinary in nature, in knowledge, and within themselves.

What De Orilla Is Not

De Orilla is not a dive shop, tour operator, travel agency, or commercial guiding service. It does not sell dive trips, certifications, or outdoor adventures.

It is not a substitute for professional training, safety instruction, or expert guidance. Readers are encouraged to seek qualified professionals, instructors, and local experts whenever engaging in diving, outdoor recreation, or other adventure activities.

The content shared reflects personal experiences, observations, and lessons learned. De Orilla is also not limited to diving. It embraces the ocean, mountains, trails, night skies, photography, science, engineering, conservation, and lifelong learning.

Most importantly, De Orilla is not about reaching a destination—it is about the journey, the discoveries made along the way, and the curiosity that inspires us to keep exploring.
